Since 2012, the BARBICIDE® Certification has established itself as a trusted credential, certifying thousands of professionals in the hair & beauty industry for their proficiency in infection control practices that adhere to the most rigorous and up-to-date industry standards. This certification serves as a benchmark for ensuring the health and safety of both practitioners and clients.
In 1947, a chemistry teacher by the name of Maurice King discovered a formula that would come to revolutionise barber shops, hair salons and beauty parlours across the globe.
King, who had suffered from scalp irritation since adolescence due to the unhygienic practices of early 20th-century barbering, was determined to rid the industry of this unpleasant shortcoming.
The breakthrough he found was an ammonium compound, that was strong enough to combat infection but mild enough for everyday use. BARBICIDE ® had been born, and hundreds of millions of coiffures would be better off for it.
No longer would barbers wipe dirty combs on a handy rag, or, perhaps their trousers. Forever after, combs and scissors would hang in suspended animation in foot-high cylindrical jars in which no germ or fungus could survive.
It didn’t take long for King’s blue liquid to gain recognition as the symbol for premium disinfection amongst barbers and soon salons and beauticians were using it too to ensure they were offering a safe service.
From these simple beginnings of a chemist trying to get a haircut in clean conditions, BARBICIDE® has come to represent an iconic product and is even featured in the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.
